An Evening With

 Steely Dan

By Revn Kevin

Tonight was a real musical treat at the Universal Amphitheatre as veteran jazz rockers Steely Dan brought their "Everything Must Go" Tour to town tonight. The duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker show us once again that they can still rock and armed with their new CD they have embarked on a tour to prove it to the rest of the nation.

If you want to play with Don and Walter then you must be an exceptional musician and on this tour they have brought some great ones with them. Matching Walter lick for lick on lead guitar was Jon Herrington, ace studio guitarist out of New York. The drummer, Keith Carlock, was young and exceptionally talented. Normally drum solos are kind of boring, just thrashing about, hard as you can, but Keith performed one that was quite musical. The whole brass section was awesome but blues legend Cornelius Bumpus on baritone sax took the spotlight. In addition to those mentioned there was a bass player, piano player, trumpet, sax, trombone, and three very lovely back-up singers. Quite a full stage and all the band members were extremely talented.

Although Steely Dan was the only act on the bill tonight they had no problem in filling up the two and a half-hours slot with great music. Steely Dan's musical history dates back thirty or more years and its' the kind of music that transports back to a time and place. They played numerous songs off the new disc sprinkled in amongst the continuos hits like "Peg", "Hey Nineteen", "FM", "Josie" and "My Old School" just to name a few. Although the crowd was more mature (no mosh pits) than a typical rock concert there were fans of all ages in attendance proving that great music will always transcend the generations.

If you would like to catch up on the history of Steely Dan then I recommend that you visit their website at www.steelydan.com and pick up their new CD "Everything Must Go" for some great listening.
