UFO and Starwood
at the House of Blues
By Revn Kevin
A couple of heavy hitting classic hard rock bands are UFO and the Scorpions. Over the last 30+ years they have undergone numerous line-up changes with various members pursuing solo careers. As luck would have it, this fall all the major players from those bands would be in town doing shows and it became a mission to see them all. Having recently reviewed Michael Schenker (UFO and Scorpions) along with Uli Roth (Scorpions) the next piece of the puzzle was to see the latest incarnation of UFO. Touring in support of their new release 'You Are Here' original members Phil Mogg, Pete Way and Paul Raymond have enlisted the services of guitar phenomenon Vinnie Moore and with Jason Bonham bashing skins a world class act was formed.
The live show was excellent with all the energy and enthusiasm you would expect from players of this caliber. Singer Phil Mogg still can hold the notes and his stage presence is very powerful. The band was extremely tight and sounded great as the slammed their way through new material like 'The Spark That is Us' and classic hits 'Rock Bottom', 'Lights Out', 'Too Hot to Handle" and all their other hits. I'm going try to pick me up a copy of the new release to review but if you can't wait then check out their website at
www.ufo-music.info and get all the news yourself.
Opening act tonight is a fairly new group Starwood with members Lizzy/vocals and guitar, Joe Steals/lead guitar, Marten Andersson/bass and Joey Scott on drums. Signed to Metal Blade records this group has a new release 'If It Ain't Broke, Break It' and the music is a crazy mix of punk, hard rock and good old fashioned metal. It harkens back to the day when bands like GnR and Motley Crue ruled the strip playing to packed clubs like the Starwood. The bands live performance added to feel of the music and their shout along choruses kept the audience rocking along. I acquired a copy of their CD and will be giving it a listen real soon. Keep your eye on this group as they explode on the scene and if you want advance notice of the bands happenings then go check them out at
