Slaughter, Winger, Warrant and Whitesnake
at the Universal Amphitheater
By Revn Kevin
Another hot summer night and the hottest show tonight was at the Universal Amphitheater. Whitesnake was back in town and brought along Slaughter, Warrant and Kip Winger who performed a short solo acoustic set.
First up was Slaughter who led by vocalist Mark Slaughter put on a kick-ass set of hard rocking tunes. The band, consisting of Jeff Bland on guitar, Dana Strum slapping bass and Bobby Rock filling in on drums was very tight and put on an exciting stage show. Following Slaughter was Kip Winger who put on a short acoustic set of his originals and lamented how his band had disappeared on him.
Warrant picked up the pace again and Jani Lane was in fine form tonight belting out all their best material including a couple of new ones "Face" and "Subhuman" off of their new "Under the Influence" CD. The CD is an interesting collection of covers along with the new songs and is only available at their website www.warrantweb.net. Billy Morris on lead guitar was cooking tonight and Erik Turner on rhythm guitar took his share of the spotlight also. Jerry Dixon had a very cool custom "Slaughter" bass, which he used along with drummer Mike Fasano to hold the bottom end together.
Headlining tonight's bill was Whitesnake. This was the third show here in L.A. in the last 5 months and tonight's show was billed as the Rock Never Stops Tour. Vocalist David Coverdale was belting out hit after hit and was backed by all-star guitarists Reb Beach and Doug Aldrich. Powering through classics "Here I Go Again", "Is This Love" and "Still of the Night" the show was exciting from start to finish. Although these are some great songs it would be nice if next time they come through town they would throw something new at us.
